Why our matcha?
What you put in your body matters, and so does where it comes from.
At MIKAMI, everything starts with quality you can feel from the first sip. Smooth, balanced, and made for a steadier kind of energy.
Shade-Grown → First Harvest → Steamed → Stone-Ground → Whisked → Enjoyed
Why Our Matcha Is Different
Not all matcha is created equal.
From where it's grown to when it's harvested and how it's processed, every step influences the colour, flavour and experience in your cup.
At Mikami, we believe exceptional matcha doesn't need anything added. When the quality is right, the difference speaks for itself.
It Starts With the First Harvest
Every spring, the youngest and most tender tea leaves are carefully picked for the season's first harvest.
These leaves are naturally richer in amino acids, giving high-quality matcha its vibrant green colour, smooth texture and delicate sweetness.
It's why our matcha is naturally mellow, with balanced umami and a clean finish—never harsh or bitter.
Grown in Kagoshima, Japan
Our matcha is grown in Kagoshima, one of Japan's most respected tea-growing regions.
Rich volcanic soils, abundant rainfall and a mild climate create ideal conditions for producing beautifully balanced tea with exceptional depth of flavour.
Every harvest reflects the place it comes from.
Shade-Grown for Flavour
Several weeks before harvest, the tea plants are shaded from direct sunlight.
This traditional practice encourages the leaves to produce more chlorophyll and naturally occurring L-theanine, contributing to matcha's vibrant green colour, smooth character and distinctive umami flavour.
Stone-Ground the Traditional Way
After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried and slowly stone-ground into an ultra-fine powder.
Unlike faster commercial milling methods, traditional stone grinding helps preserve the delicate flavour, colour and silky texture that premium matcha is known for.
The result is a powder that whisks effortlessly into a smooth, creamy cup.
Freshness Matters
Matcha is delicate. From the moment it's ground, it begins to lose some of the vibrant colour, aroma and flavour that make premium matcha so special.
That's why our tea is kept in cold storage before it's ground. Rather than sitting on a shelf for months, each batch is stone-ground to order before making its way to us.
The result is a fresher matcha with a brighter green colour, smoother flavour and the vibrant character you'd expect from a premium first-harvest tea.
It's one of the many small details that makes a noticeable difference in your cup.
Organic Matcha (JAS). Nothing Else.
Our matcha contains one ingredient.
Organic Japanese matcha.
No fillers.
No sweeteners.
No flavours.
No unnecessary additives.
Just pure matcha, exactly as nature intended.
What Does It Taste Like?
Many people assume matcha should be bitter.
It shouldn't.
High-quality matcha is smooth, balanced and naturally sweet, with delicate umami and a clean finish that lingers pleasantly on the palate.
If you've only ever tried lower-grade matcha, the difference can be surprising.
Traditional or Latte? Both.
Our matcha is intentionally versatile.
Enjoy it traditionally with water to appreciate its delicate flavour, or whisk it into your favourite milk for a smooth, café-quality matcha latte.
However you prepare it, you'll experience the same vibrant colour, silky texture and balanced taste.
Calm Energy That Lasts
Unlike coffee's rapid spike, matcha provides a more gradual source of caffeine.
Combined with the naturally occurring amino acid L-theanine, many people describe the experience as calm, focused and sustained throughout the day. Individual experiences vary.
Why We Chose This Matcha
We didn't want to offer dozens of blends.
We wanted to offer one exceptional everyday matcha.
One that's smooth enough for beginners, refined enough for traditional preparation, and versatile enough for your daily latte.
Because the best matcha isn't the one with the longest list of tasting notes.
It's the one you genuinely look forward to making every morning.
